PHIL PARISI
BS Mechanical Engineering, MS Ocean Engineering
Hi there! Pleasure to meet you. I grew up in the Midwest and had a knack for creating and modifying gadgets (e.g. nerf guns); Marquette awarded me a BSc in Mechanical Engineering in 2020. Grad school felt right but I remained ambivalent, so I packed my life into a Prius and drove to Albuquerque, NM. There I worked on autonomous systems, falling in love with how the robots interact with the physical world. After stumbling upon ocean engineering and the ability to spend time at sea around the world, I made the decision to research underwater autonomous vehicles (no-brainer, right?). Looking into autonomous surface vessels, autonomous sensing systems, and ocean mapping. I dream of building autonomous aquatic fleets that solve some of the world's greatest challenges. In my 30s I want to build a startup that plants and harvest deep-sea seaweed / kelp as a carbon sink and nutritional supplement. Later in life, I'll move into policy to make true systematic changes to the way we operate as a civilization.
RESEARCH: Applying sparse Gaussian Process Regression (GPR) methods for greater computational efficiency and learning [Master's Degree]. Then, applying GPR to other principle autonomy algorithms, such as sub-map SLAM. Future work in spatial/temporal mapping of environmental variables.
INTERESTS: Autonomous Navigation (SLAM, Path-Planning, Control), Robotics, UAVs and AUVs GOALS: Found a Tech Startup, affect Policy, contribute to a reduction in emissions HOBBIES: Rock-climbing, running, reading, travel, comedy, YouTube
